Chapter Nine

As soon as the women were inside of the house wonderful smells assaulted their senses. Miranda was standing in a medium sized kitchen just off to the right of the doorway. She had a pot simmering on the stove and something baking in the oven. It all smelled heavenly and at once both women remembered they were hungry. Brittany was standing at the sink holding up sudsy yellow gloved hands and an apron that was much too large for her tiny frame. “Look me, and Miranda are making dinner.” Sarah looked at Brittany and said, “I see that have you been helping?” “Yep, Miranda even let me use the can opener.” At that Jennifer smiled and said, “Well it smells good, me and your mom are going to carry the suitcases upstairs would you like to join us?” “Nope, I already went up there, I’m going to stay with Miranda all right?” Jennifer was surprised but, happy she liked being around Miranda too. She was warm and kind and she knew that Brittany was in good hands with her. Jennifer looked at Sarah and said, “After you.” Once the women were upstairs, they both stood in the hallway unsure of what to do next. Then finally Jennifer took the lead, left her suitcase standing in the hall and opened a door to the first bedroom. It was small but, very neat with a full-size bed, a small chest of drawers, and a nightstand with a small lamp on it. The walls were a cheerful yellow and the bedspread was a light shade of blue. There was a picture of the ocean on one wall and in general the room felt very light and airy for its size. Then Jennifer moved to the closet it was bigger than she expected, and it was lined with cedar planks. So far room number one was good. Jennifer turned around to see Sarah leaning against the door frame. There was sunlight streaming in behind her from someplace and it left a soft halo of light around her. Jennifer’s heart started beating faster. Petey was right Brittany did take after her mother both had a small frame, and both had blond wavy hair. The main difference was Brittany had Vincent’s deep brown eyes. Sarah had blue eyes a shade darker than the bed spread she was looking at only a moment before. It was those eyes that caused her to feel weak in her knees; those eyes stirred feelings inside her she had no desire to explore. After looking Sarah up down and then back up again she realized how terrible it must look to Sarah who had not spoken a word. So, she started talking (always her way out), “how was the other bedroom?” Sarah didn’t even hear what Jennifer had said she was lost in her own thoughts.

While Jennifer was openly looking Sarah over Sarah decided to do the same. Jennifer was nearly 3 inches taller than her 5’6” and she had an athlete’s body.
